The Nutcracker Ballet
THE NUTCRACKER is based on the E.T.A. Hoffman fairy tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The ballet was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia on December 17, 1892, with choreography by Lev Ivanov and music by Pytor I. Tchaikovsky.
The Nutcracker is a heartwarming Christmas favorite about a young girl's journey through a magical world of princes, toy soldiers, scurrying mice, a flurry of snowflakes and dancing sweets. Hawaii State Ballet's colorful and warm-spirited production is highlighted by the youthful, fun vitality of the young performers, executing challenging choreography with power and grace. HSB’s Nutcracker is filled with a magical wonder that has become an endearing annual tradition for so many local families.
